Levine Works Judge Story

And admits to 025 officers that he found the story on the blog:
  • A showdown between the cops and the courts over setting violent criminals free, before and after they've been convicted. CBS 2 Chief correspondent Jay Levine chased one lead -- and ended up uncovering a much larger controversy.

It was a tip that seemed almost unbelievable -- and took us all day to confirm. Because in Chicago, police and prosecutors are afraid to criticize judges they'll have to face again.

In the end, several beat cops quietly filled us in, and authorities confirmed the facts we brought them: 18-year-old Chandra Crittenden is charged with unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault on a police officer.

She was arrested following a police chase on the West Side. When officers caught up with her, according to this report we've obtained, she allegedly pointed a loaded .380-caliber handgun at one of them. He pushed her to the fence and the gun fell to the ground.
The editors at CBS asked us via e-mail to find them cops willing to talk on camera. We got a bit short with them and told them they ought to be doing the job they've been neglecting for 20 years concerning Daley, Cook County and the endemic corruption within.

We can't help but wonder if the recent spate of stories pointing out a bit of Daley-led corruption are kind of "feeler" stories the media is doing to see what kind of market there is for anti-Daley and anti-Machine material. Jackie Heard has got to be sweating if she isn't the media's only conduit for info anymore. That might be a way to save $180,000 in the near future.
