See Ya Ike

  • The booming preacher's voice he often used to staunchly defend Mayor Richard Daley's policies at City Hall was missing Monday as a stone-faced Ald. Isaac "Ike" Carothers quietly pleaded guilty in federal court to bribery and tax charges, bringing to 29 the number of aldermen — his father included — to be convicted over the last four decades.

The felony conviction capped a stunning fall for Carothers, who admitted his guilt in exchange for a 28-month prison term. Carothers was that rare alderman who agreed to work undercover for federal authorities, wearing a wire and secretly recording other public officials and businessmen. Next month he is scheduled to testify at the trial of a developer accused of providing Carothers with $40,000 in home improvements for backing a controversial project in his 29th Ward.

So now Daley gets to appoint yet another aldercreature who will owe him their very existence.

How about handing out sentences of 12 to 20 years in the pen? That would loosen some tongues and get some investigations rolling along.

Another Altar Boy Lawsuit

  • The mother of a high school junior fatally shot by an off-duty Chicago police officer last September filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.

In the suit filed today in Cook County Circuit Court, attorneys for Natasha Williams, whose son, Corey Harris Jr., was killed last Sept. 11, said the officer acted recklessly during the incident and that the city is liable.

  • Just after the shooting, police said the off-duty officer saw Harris fire shots at someone, leading to the pursuit. But the suit claims the officer -- dressed in plain clothes -- never identified himself as police and shot the teen in the back.

Law enforcement sources had told the Tribune that a weapon wasn't found with Harris, but at least one of the sources said he might have tossed the weapon during the chase. Police eventually recovered a .40-caliber handgun. The suit refutes that Harris ever had a weapon.

Bullets in victim came from the recovered weapon so it seems the officer got the right guy. If he was off-duty, he's not required to wear a uniform. The lack of identification as the police is most likely a lie seeing as how we're trained. And we're allowed to shoot people in the back - it's a preferred tactic since the safest spot to be when someone is shooting at someone else is behind the gun. City, State and Federal law don't require a stand-up gun battle at 10 paces.

FOP Board Meeting Today

Different from the General Meeting, but since it's election day today, perhaps someone would like to show up and ask the Board how they managed to let an endorsement go through for a lawyer who defends people who shoot cops. The meeting is at 9 or 10 am we think.

Here's Mark Donahue's latest reply to a reader of ours when he asked how this happened:
  • It should be obvious that we didn't know. Gallagher came recommended from Police and Politicians alike. Had we heard from our members before the endorsement process began, I'm sure the outcome would be different. Gallagher has been out there campaigning since last June and no one came up with this info till this past Friday. He is running unopposed in the primary and we will be able to take corrective measures in the fall. Thanks for the input.
    Mark
So it's the memberships' fault the FOP didn't do their homework and they took recommendations from politicians and unnamed police officers? How do we know who's seeking the endorsement prior to them appearing before your committee?

Here's a clue Mark - politicians have axes to grind and agendas to pursue. You and your ticket were elected to look out for the members' interests. You seem to have failed - badly - and you want to blame the membership? Did you even ask the membership if they had any experiences with those seeking the FOP endorsement? We didn't see a list of names in the newsletter or the website.

Once a lawyer dips their beak into defending those who would murder us, there's really no return to our good graces. The same might be said for those who endorse those same lawyers.

Nice One Barack

Is there anyone he won't bow to?

That's the mayor of Tampa for pete's sake. Did he think she was a communist dictator, a Saudi prince or a Japanese emperor?

Thank goodness the Wall Street Journal has declared the Obama spell is broken.

Tantas guerras, traspasando barreras
ohhh ohhh ohhh ohhh
Y todos estarán cantando
ohhh ohhh ohhh ohhh
Y todos estarán cantando
ohhh ohhh ohhh ohhh
