Oh, What Tales he Could Tell

  • Al Sanchez, the city's former Streets and Sanitation commissioner, lobbied top aides to Mayor Richard Daley to ensure that members of Sanchez's political organization moved to the front of the line for city jobs, a former department official testified today.

Jack Drumgould, personnel director under Sanchez, testified at the first day of Sanchez's fraud trial that Sanchez gave him names of Hispanic Democratic Organization members whom he wanted hired. Drumgould said he in turn took the names to the mayor's Office of Intergovernmental Affairs. Other political groups and labor unions were clamoring for their share of the jobs pie, he said.
And joy of joys, it has a CPD twist!
  • Drumgould, who is testifying under immunity from prosecution, was a witness in 2006 at the corruption trial of Robert Sorich, the former patronage boss under Daley who was convicted of rigging hiring.

He testified Wednesday that the hiring system in Chicago was set up to reward organizations such as HDO. Sanchez would sometimes call Drumgould into his office and mark up a list of names of people who had applied for work, he said.

"He would say, 'This is Tony's guy' or 'This is Eddie's guy,' " Drumgould said, adding that he knew those to be references to state Sen. Tony Munoz and Rep. Eddie Acevedo, two politicians with links to HDO.
Hey, J-Fed? Do you have any idea what a sea of horseshit you managed to wander into? Did anyone give you any kinds of heads up on this stuff? You were doomed the minute you said "yes."

You'd think, with so many ex-CPD and on-leave-CPD in the political structure, we'd be treated a little bit better in Springfield and City Hall. But no, not even once that we can remember. Amazing.
