What a Night

Sounds like another Saturday disaster:
  • A 3-year-old boy was fatally shot early today in what appeared to be an accident in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, authorities said.

Jaquan Reed, of the 500 block of Plum Grove Road in Roselle, was shot in a home in the 4700 block of West Van Buren Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

  • Two people were slain overnight in separate shootings, according to Chicago police.

In the first attack, a 25-year-old woman was in a vehicle in the 8300 block of South Brandon Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. when an assailant fired and she was hit in her abdomen, according to a police news release.

[...] In the second attack, a 19-year-old man was shot in his abdomen shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the 5100 block of West North Avenue, according to the release.

  • A man was critically injured late Saturday in a shooting in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

The victim, who is in his 30s, was in the 600 block of East 87th Street about 11:55 p.m. when struck by gunfire, police said.

And the police were shooting, too:
  • An on-duty officer shot someone early today in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side after the suspect fired a weapon on the street, police said.

The officers saw the gunman fire the weapon in the 5400 block of South Homan Avenue, then the gunman turned and pointed the weapon at the officers, according to a police news release.

  • Chicago police fired shots Saturday night on the Near South Side, but no one was hit, authorities said.

Details were sketchy as the investigation continued as of about 11:30 p.m., said Officer John Henry at Police News Affairs. He said one person was believed to be in custody following the shooting near 14th Street and Blue Island Avenue.

Just another regular weekend in the big city.
