- A Chicago man accused of causing a wreck that killed a pregnant pedestrian and her child had cocaine in his bloodstream, prosecutors said today.
James E. Cox, 39, is charged with aggravated driving under the influence, causing a death. Cox was driving a minivan southbound on Kostner Avenue on Oct. 21 when he allegedly ran a red light, striking a vehicle in the intersection at Washington Boulevard, and causing both automobiles to careen into a group of pedestrians on the sidewalk, prosecutors said.
Judge Maria Kuriakos-Cesil ordered him held on $500,000 bond.
Fifteen convictions for driving suspended or revoked? Aren't there any provisions for progressive jail time or prison? Most jurisdictions have increased penalties if you keep doing the same stupid shit over and over and over. Hell, CPD has the SPAR system to discourage you from repeating the same mistake again and again.
Obviously, whatever is in place isn't working, and it can be seen across the spectrum of offenses when you see UUW offenders get a slap on the wrist and then get caught with guns again, or the street corner dope dealer with a 10 page rap sheet, or the working girl with the 80 pager. There's no way this guy should have been anywhere near a car. And the only way to keep him from one is via a 12-foot wall and coils of barbed wire.
