Wow! 44 Officers!

  • Mayor Daley today ordered 44 Chicago Police officers working desk jobs and in the arson unit reassigned to street duty to solve a severe manpower shortage caused by a two-year slowdown in police hiring.

Together with 86 police recruits due to graduate from the police academy on July 14, the depleted ranks will be bolstered by 130 officers by mid-summer, when the homicide rate traditionally rises and violent crime normally reaches its peak.

Fraternal Order of Police President Mark Donahue dismissed today’s announcement as a “Band-Aid.” He noted that 16 percent of officers assigned to police districts were “detailed out” — moved to other units — as of May 25, up from 12 percent a year ago.

16% detailed out. That's a rather large number. Then there's the position that those officers are being counted twice. Once in the District complement and once in the unit of detail. So if you have 300 officers assigned to District 000, that's one set of numbers. And the 48 officers detailed out are counted again in TRU, MSF, Vice, where ever they happen to be serving their time. Then the Department denies officers a chance to bid for those "vacant" spots in the district by claiming the district is "up to strength."

And the Department continues to offer overtime initiatives in lieu of hiring. It's going to get far worse before it gets any better.
