Happy Ending

  • Englewood District officers were looking for the offender in a robbery that occurred on the 1000 block of West 63rd St. when they spotted a man matching the description at about 12:40 p.m., police said in a news release.

The suspect fled on foot when officers tried speaking with him. The suspect then pointed a handgun at the pursuing officers, one whom fired, but missed the fleeing man, police said.

Police said an assisting officer who saw the suspect pointing the handgun opened fire on the suspect, striking him in the 6200 block of South Morgan Street. The unidentified man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Police recovered a weapon at the scene.

Including the stories immediately below this one, that's three attempts to kill Chicago Police Officers in under 24 hours. In each case, skill, training and some luck saved all of us an unhappy holiday season.

We don't know if it's just us, but these stories seem to be popping up more and more lately. Be careful. A wise Patrol Specialist once told us that the colder weather just meant that more of the people you run into outside are the hard core assholes who are up to no good - "Decent people stay inside after dark and when the temperature drops below freezing." It sure seems that way sometimes.
