Mayor Daley today cracked the door open to providing a government subsidy for cash-strapped McCormick Place, but only if the convention center cleans its own house first and ends price gouging that has triggered a trade show exodus.
“If it costs you $40 [an-hour] to set this up, why are you putting another $60 on? You’re saying the cost is $100. It’s really not $100. It’s only $40,” Daley said.
“Before you get all the subsidies throwing money at this, you first have to correct and rebuild the foundation. ... Let’s not talk about subsidies now. Let’s first correct what you have in-house. ... First, re-organize what is happening at McCormick Place.”
Once again, we thought Daley was broke. He's been saying so for a year or two now.
